The Business of Government
Many government organizations are under pressure to adopt AI while maintaining accountability, compliance and public trust. In this episode of Weaver: Beyond the Numbers, Business of Government, Adam Jones and Brett Nabors discuss how agencies can approach AI governance by defining risk tolerance and accountability while building on governance structures already in place. Their discussion explores why AI governance is not simply a technology issue and how existing governance practices can adapt as AI use grows. For public-sector leaders, the challenge is finding the balance between encouraging innovation and maintaining appropriate oversight.
Key Points:
- Existing governance frameworks can often support AI adoption when accountability and risk tolerance are clearly defined.
- Risk-based approval tiers help organizations encourage innovation without applying unnecessary oversight to low-risk uses.
- AI may already be embedded across an organization, making visibility into its use and clear accountability important parts of governance.
Government organizations may not need to build an entirely new governance structure for AI. Existing committees, procurement processes and decision-making structures can provide a foundation, with agencies adapting them to address AI-specific considerations such as accountability, acceptable use and risk tolerance.
A central theme throughout the discussion is that successful AI adoption depends on establishing a clear risk tolerance. Organizations struggle to move forward when that tolerance has not been defined. As Brett explains, “I think a lot of times what’s stopping progression is a lack of tolerance or a lack of defining that tolerance level so you can operate within it.” Once those boundaries are established, agencies can begin determining where greater oversight is needed and where there may be room to experiment.
Adam and Brett also highlight a challenge many leaders may not fully recognize: AI is already being used throughout the organization. Employees may interact with AI through productivity tools, software platforms and third-party applications long before formal policies are established. Rather than attempting to prohibit every use case, agencies need visibility into where AI is already being used and practical guardrails for managing that use.
The episode closes with a lightning round focused on some of the practical questions surrounding AI governance. Adam asks Brett what agencies consistently get wrong, which governance habit can scale as AI use grows and what leaders should keep in mind when writing their first AI policy. His answers offer a final look at where government leaders can focus as their approach to AI governance takes shape.
