California Extends Tax Filing Deadlines in Response to Winter Storms

The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) extended the tax filing deadline to October 16, 2023 for individuals and businesses in response to winter storms in the state from December 2022 through February 2023. With this extension, the state is aligned with the extension by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) of the federal tax deadline for California residents impacted by the storms.

The FTB’s extension applies to deadlines falling on or after January 8, 2023, and before October 16, 2023. It applies to:

• Individual income tax returns and payments due April 18, 2023.
• Quarterly estimated tax payments due January 17, 2023, April 18, 2023, June 15, 2023, and September 15, 2023.
• Business entities whose tax returns are normally due on March 15 and April 18.
• PTE Elective Tax payments due on June 15, 2023.

This applies to businesses and residents in the following counties:

Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Inyo, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Benito, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Diego, San Francisco, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Tuolumne, Ventura, and Yolo.

Disaster Loss Deduction

In January, California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that residents affected by winter storms may claim a deduction for a disaster loss when filing either an original or amended tax return for tax year 2022.

This applies to businesses and residents in the following counties:

Alameda, Butte, Calveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Fresno, Glenn, Humboldt, Kings, Lake, Los Angeles, Madera, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Mono, Monterey, Napa, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Benito, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Siskiyou, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Tehama, Trinity, Tulare, Ventura, Yolo, and Yuba.
