Giving Back: A Look Inside the Weaver Private Foundation – Boys and Girls Country of Houston

The Weaver Private Foundation is dedicated to creating a relationship between our employees and the communities in which we work and live. We encourage a workplace culture of outreach, and one of the Foundation’s goals is to support Weaver employees in their personal volunteer efforts. So, twice a year, we give our employees the opportunity to apply for contributions to an organization they’re involved with. In this half of the year, the Foundation donated $19,000 to 14 different organizations on behalf of our employees in support of their community involvement efforts. Below we highlight one of these organizations and the reasons our employees support them.
Boys and Girls Country of Houston – Houston, Texas
Nominated by Hayley Heeney
Boys and Girls Country of Houston, Inc. (BGC) works to change the lives of children from families in crisis by loving and nurturing them in a Christian home environment, raising them to become self-sustaining and contributing adults. BGC provides homes to more than 100 children and young adults every year. With a network of 11 cottage families and an extended Christian neighborhood, each cottage is comprised of eight children, a married “Teaching Parent”, and two single Teaching Parents, who raise these children as their own. BGC is licensed by the State of Texas as a residential home. The Teaching Family model, developed in 1967 at the University of Kansas, is the program BGC’s Teaching Parents use to teach the children life skills that supports their success now and in the future.
Weaver’s Hayley Heeney, TSBS Associate II, volunteered last January by teaching a financial literacy class to their high school students and plans to teach another one in June. “This organization not only provides a home for children in need but also a loving environment that encourages their student’s growth and development. They provide tutoring to their students while in school, help their students attend college or vocational school, and help them prepare for adulthood,” Hayley said. “I think the Boys and Girls Country does an excellent job of not only educating their students but setting a positive example for them to follow. They run a fantastic program to help these children achieve their dreams.”
