Howdy Y'all: A Secondee's Experience at Weaver Part 3
This year Weaver had four visiting staff members participate in the Weaver Secondment Program, two working in Dallas and two in Houston. See what Tom Bourke from Pitcher Partners in Australia had to say about his experience at Weaver and in the United States.
Name: Tom Bourke
Position: Senior Associate II, Audit, Dallas
Dates: January – April 2016
Hometown: Melbourne, Australia
What were the objectives of the secondment?
The main objectives were to gain an understanding of the auditing process in another country and to learn and observe different ways to do things. Personally, it was my first time in the states so I was keen to explore, network, meet new people and gain a taste for the great American culture.
Briefly detail your secondment experience.
Overall, the secondment experience was a wonderful opportunity which I enjoyed immensely. I would definitely recommend that future applicants put their foot forward and apply for a secondment opportunity.
What have you learned as a result of the secondment experience?
It was interesting to learn the different procedures that are carried out as part of the auditing process at Weaver. I also learned various conversion rates from the metric system to the out-of-date imperial system.
What was something that surprised you about the local culture?
There are two main things I picked up from Texas culture: Everyone is a crazy driver, and Mexican food is fantastic.
What was a challenge you had to overcome while being in the United States?
My biggest challenges were driving on the other side of the road and writing dates backwards on my audit work papers.
Did you pick up a local phrase or habit while here?
I learned that “y’all” can be used in every context.
What was your most/least favorite Texas food that you have tried while in the United States?
I loved the Tex-Mex food, particularly the chicken fajitas. I have also managed to gain an addiction to hot dogs.
