Detailed Description of Weaver’s Motor Fuels Tax Minute, Episode 79
00:00:00
Leanne: Welcome to Weaver’s Motor Fuels Tax Minute, the vlog where we talk all things motor fuel. We’re back today with the second in our series regarding amended returns. And Kelly is going to tell us how we file those amended returns once we realize that we need them.

Kelly: A lot of times people think that you would just file the amended return exactly the way that you filed your original return. If you submit it via EDI [Electronic Data Interchange], you send a new EDI, you submit it via paper, you send a new paper return. But it really all depends on the state.
You could actually submit a return electronically, and the state could then require you to send the amended return, either via email or they could ask you to send a paper return. I know Wyoming has an upload process that they use for amended returns, but it’s not the usual upload process that you do with your original return. It’s more like an attachment.
Back in the day, I used to have a boss that said motor fuel tax returns are just a check of the box. Well, I haven’t checked that many boxes in my career, but I will tell you for amended returns, there also is sometimes a check box that you need to be aware of, or something you need to circle to identify that the return is the amended return. So, pay attention to that. Make sure you pay attention to how it should be submitted, because if you submit it the wrong way, it’ll either be rejected or the state won’t acknowledge it.

Leanne: Thanks, Kelly. And I think in addition to state, it’s worth noting that federal also has a different way. You can file paper for your Form 720. They do like electronic. They haven’t yet got the Form 720X in their electronic system, and it’s on their website that it does have to be paper filed. So, another example of where your original return and your amendment might be filed differently.

Kelly: Awesome. That is great information, Leanne. And yeah, we just ran into this the other week, so I’m glad you brought that up.
