The Client
The client is a large not-for-profit health system operating across a complex portfolio of care delivery and business arrangements. Navigating a highly regulated industry, the organization focused on offering quality patient care while maintaining financial sustainability. Its leadership was responsible for evaluating multiple interdependent decisions that would influence the system’s overall financial performance and long-term growth.
The Challenge
The health system reached a strategic inflection point as leadership evaluated 15 interdependent decisions related to joint ventures and internal initiatives. Each decision carried financial implications, but the interconnected nature of the scenarios made it difficult to isolate and understand the cumulative financial impact.
Without a clear way to visualize how individual choices affect overall performance, leadership faced uncertainty during planning and risked making decisions without a full picture of the organization’s financial trajectory. Compounding the challenge, the complexity of the analysis and the need for timely insights created pressure to develop a solution that could support confident, informed decision-making.
The Process
To support critical strategic decisions, Weaver’s health care valuation team developed a structured approach to evaluate complex planning scenarios and their potential financial impact. As part of this approach, the team created a model that allowed leadership to adjust key inputs, toggle inclusion or exclusion of specific projects, and assess the overall impact on financial results.
Key elements of the process included:

- Incorporating robust backend calculations, including cash flows, buy-ins, exits and fees to support accurate and reliable analysis
- Considering valuation implications where appropriate to reflect different strategic paths
- Translating complex interdependencies into a streamlined framework that balanced usability with analytical rigor
- Building flexibility into the model so leadership could adjust assumptions and update scenarios as planning discussions evolved
This approach allowed the model to serve as an ongoing tool rather than a one‑time analysis.
The Deliverables
