The Client
The client is a U.S.-based merchant energy company with a growing trading and commercial operation supporting complex power market activity. The company manages trading, risk, pricing and margin reporting processes across multiple systems and data sources. As the business scaled, leadership prioritized modernizing its data architecture, strengthening reporting reliability and establishing governance standards to support informed decisions, regulatory expectations and continued growth.
The Challenge
The company’s trading and commercial teams relied on a fragmented data landscape spread across energy trading and risk management (ETRM) platforms, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, third party market data providers and internally developed models. Reporting processes were highly manual, time consuming and difficult to scale, limiting transparency into positions, risk, profit and loss (P&L) and margin.
The organization also lacked a formal data governance framework to define ownership, standards and accountability. Leadership needed a clear view of the current-state data environment, a scalable target architecture and governance structures that would ensure data quality, while meeting security and regulatory expectations as the business grew.
The Process
Weaver worked closely with the client to deliver a phased, practical data transformation focused on immediate business value and long term sustainability. The engagement began with documenting the current (as is) data environment across trading, market data and reporting systems, identifying gaps, redundancies and risks.
Our team then designed a target operating model built on a modern analytics architecture and developed a proof of concept to demonstrate extract, transform and load (ETL), data modeling and advanced analytics capabilities for trading use cases such as position, curve and risk reporting.
Weaver implemented a formal data governance framework, establishing clear governance principles, defined data ownership and associated policies within a centralized model. We further supported the company with live margin reporting enhancements, documentation and knowledge transfer to ensure sustainability and adoption.
The Deliverables
Weaver provided a comprehensive suite of strategy, architecture and governance outputs that improved the client’s data and reporting capabilities.
Key deliverables included:
- As-is system and data landscape documentation, highlighting gaps, redundancies and improvement opportunities
- Target data operating model and implementation roadmap aligned to trading and commercial priorities
- Analytics and reporting proof of concept to demonstrate scalable ETL, data modeling and advanced analytics for trading insights
- Enterprise data governance framework, including governance principles, ownership models, policies and committee structures
- Live margin reporting solution with refreshed processes, documentation and user guidance to sustain ongoing operations
Together, these deliverables improved transparency, reduced manual effort and strengthened controls, positioning the company with a scalable, well governed data foundation for future growth.
