The Client
A European investment company with a global portfolio focused on renewable energy assets was involved in a high-stakes legal matter. The company was public, operated multiple business lines and had operations in several jurisdictions, creating a complex web of data and potential leads. Its investments spanned power generation and sustainable infrastructure projects across multiple countries.
The Challenge
The client engaged Weaver’s forensics and litigation team to identify assets of a global renewable energy company, its related entities and owners during a complex legal dispute. The team navigated a network of subsidiaries, executives and cross-border operations, producing a large volume of data and potential leads to analyze.
Accurate and comprehensive insight played a critical role in this case. The client needed to uncover the full scope of these assets to guide their legal strategy and drive settlement discussions, protecting financial and operational interests.
The Process
Our team leveraged advanced research tools to develop a complete, high-level view of the company’s activities and asset footprint. This initial analysis helped establish a starting point and identify potential areas for deeper review. From there, we conducted a detailed investigation into the company’s assets, subsidiaries and executives using public records, investigative databases and targeted source inquiries.
The process extended beyond the primary target entity. Weaver applied the same investigative approach to subsidiaries identified during the review, as well as to the company’s controlling individual, allowing the team to uncover relationships and assets that were not immediately apparent. By layering multiple data sources and validating findings across jurisdictions, Weaver built a clearer picture of asset ownership and structure. This methodical, cross-border approach enabled the team to deliver reliable findings that supported the client’s legal strategy and settlement discussions.
The Deliverables
As a result of this work, Weaver delivered several key components that supported a successful outcome.
- Report: Weaver’s forensic and litigation services team compiled its findings into a comprehensive asset investigation report. The report detailed the company’s recently purchased assets, as well as assets held by its subsidiaries. Our team discovered energy contracts acquired by the target, multiple real properties, banking relationships and a separate U.S.-based business created by the target’s CEO and controlling individual. This was information not previously known by the client.
- Discovery target list: Our report included a discovery target list, outlining key individuals, companies and financial institutions with relationships to the subject company that the client could pursue for additional information in litigation.
- Outcome: In January 2025, the client reached a settlement agreement with the subject company. The subject company agreed to pay €45 million (approximately $52 million USD).
The findings provided the client with greater clarity into the subject company’s asset structure, supporting a stronger position during settlement negotiations.
